What will Amazon charge to store your inventory?
Storage is the FBA fee most sellers forget — until Q4, when the rate triples, or until stock passes six months and the aged-inventory surcharge starts. This Amazon FBA storage fee calculator uses the 2026 US rate card to show this month’s storage bill and what the same stock will cost every month until it sells out, so you can decide how much to send in, when to run a deal and when to remove slow sellers.
How Amazon storage fees are calculated
Monthly storage fee = average units stored × cubic feet per unit × rate per cubic foot
Cubic feet per unit = length × width × height in inches ÷ 1,728, measured on the packaged item. A 12 × 9 × 4 inch box is 0.25 ft³. At the January–September standard-size rate of $0.78, storing 300 of them costs about $58.50 a month; in October–December, at $2.40, the same stock costs $180.
2026 monthly storage rates (US)
| Per cubic foot | Jan–Sep | Oct–Dec |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-size | $0.78 | $2.40 |
| Oversize | $0.56 | $1.40 |
| Dangerous goods, standard-size | $0.99 | $3.63 |
| Dangerous goods, oversize | $0.78 | $2.43 |
Aged inventory surcharge 2026
Since January 16, 2026, stock that has been in Amazon’s warehouses for more than 180 days pays an extra monthly charge on top of normal storage. Amazon checks your inventory age on the 15th of each month.
| Days in stock | Per cubic foot | Per-unit minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 181–210 | $0.50 | — |
| 211–240 | $1.00 | — |
| 241–270 | $1.50 | — |
| 271–300 | $5.45 | — |
| 301–330 | $5.70 | — |
| 331–365 | $5.90 | — |
| 366–455 | $6.90 | $0.30 |
| 456+ | $7.90 | $0.35 |
Clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry and watches are not charged in the 181–270 day bands.
Storage utilization surcharge
If your account stores a lot compared with what it sells, Amazon adds a per-cubic-foot surcharge. It is based on your storage utilization ratio — your average daily inventory volume divided by your average daily shipped volume, shown in weeks in the Capacity Monitor. Below 22 weeks there is no surcharge; above that it rises in steps from $0.44 to $1.88 per cubic foot for standard-size items ($0.23 to $1.26 for oversize). New sellers, Individual-plan sellers, accounts with 25 cubic feet or less on average and stock younger than 30 days are not charged.
Worked example: the same stock sent in January and in October
A kids’ toy in a 12 × 9 × 4 inch box is 0.25 ft³. You send 300 units and sell 60 a month.
| Start month | First-month storage | Total until sold out |
|---|---|---|
| January (off-peak) | $52.65 | about $146 |
| October (peak) | $162.00 | about $401 |
Same product, same sales — but stock that sits in Amazon’s warehouses through October, November and December costs almost three times as much to store (about $1.34 per unit sold instead of $0.49). That is why experienced sellers send Q4 inventory in smaller, frequent shipments.
How to cut your Amazon storage fees
- Keep 6–10 weeks of stock at Amazon. Store the rest in your own space or a 3PL and send top-ups. Going below about 5 weeks can trigger the low-inventory-level fee, so don’t overdo it.
- Shrink the box. Storage is charged by volume. Cutting one inch off a 12 × 9 × 4 inch box saves about 25% on storage and can also lower the fulfillment fee.
- Watch day 181 and day 271. The aged-inventory surcharge starts at 181 days and jumps more than 3× at 271 days. Use the tips in the calculator to see when your stock will cross each line.
- Clear slow sellers before the 15th. Amazon checks inventory age on the 15th. A deal, a coupon, a price drop or a removal order before then avoids that month’s surcharge.
- Bring your utilization ratio under 22 weeks. The ratio covers your whole account, so removing a few slow products can remove the surcharge for everything.
Storage fee or removal order?
If a product will take many more months to sell, compare the storage shown in the month-by-month table with the cost of removing or disposing of it (see Removal order fees in Seller Central). Once stock passes 271 days, removing or liquidating it is often cheaper than keeping it.
