❓ Questions
How is the paperback cover size calculated?
Width = bleed (0.125 in) + back cover + spine + front cover + bleed. Height = bleed + trim height + bleed. Spine = page count × paper thickness: 0.002252 in for white paper and standard color, 0.0025 in for cream, 0.002347 in for premium color.
When can I put text on the spine?
KDP allows spine text from 79 pages (Cover Creator needs 80). Leave at least 0.0625 in (1.6 mm) free on each side of the text.
How much royalty do I get on a paperback?
On Amazon.com: 60% of the list price minus printing cost when the price is $9.99 or more, and 50% below $9.99. Expanded Distribution pays 40% minus printing cost.
What changed for ebooks in 2026?
The 70% royalty band on Amazon.com now goes from $2.99 up to $12.99 (it used to stop at $9.99). A delivery fee of $0.15 per MB is taken from 70% royalties.
What size should my Kindle ebook cover be?
KDP recommends 1600 × 2560 pixels (a 1 : 1.6 ratio). Keep it under 50 MB, use JPG or TIFF, and make sure the title is readable at thumbnail size.

Is your ebook cover the right size?

Amazon KDP recommends an ebook cover of 2560 px high and 1600 px wide — a height-to-width ratio of 1.6 : 1 — saved as JPG or TIFF and under 50 MB. Covers that are too small look blurry on high-resolution screens; covers with the wrong ratio get white bars or cropping. This ebook cover size checker tests your cover against every rule and fixes it in one click.

How to check your cover

  1. Drop your cover image.
  2. See which checks pass: dimensions, ratio, minimum size, file size and format.
  3. Preview it at the tiny thumbnail sizes shoppers see on Amazon — and in dark mode.

Design for thumbnails

Most shoppers first see your cover the size of a postage stamp. Use a big, bold title, simple imagery and strong contrast. If you can’t read the title in the smallest preview, make it larger. Light covers need a thin grey border so they don’t disappear on Amazon’s white page.

The ideal Kindle cover size

Amazon recommends 2,560 × 1,600 pixels (height × width), a 1.6 : 1 ratio, in JPG or TIFF. Covers smaller than 1,000 × 625 pixels are rejected, and very low-resolution covers look blurry on high-resolution screens.

What the checker tells you

Upload your cover to see its size and ratio and whether it meets KDP’s minimum and ideal size. Remember that most readers first see your cover as a tiny thumbnail in search results — zoom out on your screen to judge it at that size.

Fix the size in one click

If your cover isn’t 1.6 : 1, choose Crop to fill (fills the frame, may cut a little from the edges) or Fit + border (keeps everything, adds a border), then download a 1,600 × 2,560 JPG ready for KDP.

Thumbnail tips

  1. Big, bold title text — thin fonts disappear at thumbnail size.
  2. One strong image rather than many small details.
  3. Strong contrast between text and background.
  4. Check how it looks in greyscale for black-and-white e-readers.
