How this currency converter works
Type an amount, pick the two currencies and the result appears instantly. The converter uses the mid-market rate — the midpoint between the prices banks buy and sell a currency, the same kind of rate you see on Google or XE. Rates are updated once a day and saved on your device, so the converter keeps working if your connection drops. You can even type a sum like 250*4 or 1200+350 in the amount box.
What is the mid-market rate — and why do banks give less?
Banks, exchange shops, card companies and payment apps rarely give you the mid-market rate. They add a margin (a “spread”) to the rate and sometimes a fixed fee on top. A margin of 3% on a 1,000 USD transfer costs you 30 USD worth of money — often more than the fee they show you. Use the “What you really get” table: enter the rate you were offered and the fee, and the converter shows the hidden margin and the total cost compared with the mid-market rate.
| Where you convert | Typical margin over mid-market |
|---|---|
| Low-cost money transfer apps | About 0.3–1% |
| Banks and debit/credit cards | About 2–4% (plus possible foreign transaction fees) |
| PayPal currency conversion | 3–4% spread |
| Airport and hotel exchange desks | Often 5–10% or more |
Typical ranges for comparison only — always check the exact rate and fee before you send money.

Example
A client pays you $500. At Rs 277 per dollar that is Rs 138,500 at the mid-market rate. If your bank converts at Rs 272, you receive Rs 136,000 — Rs 2,500 less, a 1.8% hidden cost. Enter the offered rate and the converter shows this gap immediately.
Which rate is “real”?
The mid-market rate is halfway between the buying and selling price on global markets — the rate you see on Google or XE. Banks, exchange shops and apps add a margin on top. For cash in hand, open-market and interbank rates can also differ in some countries, so always compare against the rate you will actually get.
