Convert DOCX to EPUB in 4 simple steps
This free DOCX to EPUB converter turns the Word file you wrote your book in into a professional ebook. It runs completely in your browser, so your manuscript is never uploaded to a server.
- Drop your .docx file (or a .txt / Markdown file, or paste your text).
- Check the chapters. Chapters are found automatically from Word’s Heading 1 style or from lines such as “Chapter 1”, “Prologue” and “Epilogue”. Rename, merge or remove them in the list.
- Add book details and pick a style — title, author, cover, copyright page, dedication, “about the author” and a review request at the end.
- Download your EPUB and upload it to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Barnes & Noble Press or Draft2Digital.
How to prepare your Word file for the best EPUB
- Use Heading 1 for chapter titles. In Word, select the chapter title and click “Heading 1” in the Styles gallery. This is the most reliable way to get perfect chapters and a clickable table of contents.
- Don’t use blank lines or tabs for layout. Ebooks reflow on every screen, so indents and spacing come from the book style, not from spaces or empty paragraphs. The converter removes them for you.
- Use italics and bold normally — they are kept. So are lists, tables, block quotes, footnotes and images.
- Mark scene breaks with
***or#on their own line; they become a centered ornament. - Save as .docx, not the old .doc format.
Is EPUB the best format for Amazon KDP?
Yes. KDP accepts EPUB, DOCX and KPF files, and a well-made EPUB gives you the most control over how your Kindle ebook looks. KDP converts it to Kindle format when you upload. Check the result in the KDP previewer or Kindle Previewer before you publish. The same EPUB works for Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play, so you only need one ebook file for every store.
What your EPUB includes
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cover | Your cover image as the first page and as the thumbnail in reading apps |
| Title & copyright pages | Generated from your details — or imported from our copyright page generator |
| Table of contents | A linked contents page plus the reader’s navigation menu (EPUB 3 nav and NCX for older devices) |
| Chapters | One file per chapter, so every chapter starts on a new page |
| Notes | Word footnotes and endnotes become linked notes at the end of the book |
| Back matter | About the author, also-by list and a review request with your website link |
| Metadata | Title, author, language, series, description, ISBN and accessibility information |
Book styles
Classic uses a serif font and indented paragraphs like a printed novel. Elegant adds a drop cap and small capitals at the start of each chapter. Modern uses a clean sans-serif with spaced paragraphs, and Nonfiction uses block paragraphs and clear subheadings for guides and how-to books. Readers can still change the font and size on their device — that is how ebooks are meant to work.
Typography clean-up
Many manuscripts mix straight and curly quotes, use two hyphens for a dash or three dots for an ellipsis. The converter fixes these automatically — “smart quotes”, em dashes (—) and ellipses (…) — and removes double spaces, tabs and empty paragraphs, so your ebook looks professionally typeset.
After converting
Run the file through our EPUB validator to be sure it passes store checks, edit its title or series later with the EPUB metadata editor, check that your cover is the right size with the ebook cover checker, and work out your earnings with the KDP royalty calculator.

From Word file to EPUB in four steps
- Drop your .docx (or paste text). Chapters are detected from your headings.
- Check the chapter list: rename titles, merge a chapter into the one above (⤒) or untick parts you don’t want.
- Fill in the book details: title and author are required; add subtitle, language, ISBN and cover image if you have them.
- Choose a style — Classic novel, Elegant, Modern or Nonfiction — and press Download EPUB after the pre-flight check.
Pages added for you
A proper title page, copyright page, table of contents and optional “About the author” and “Also by” pages are created automatically, so you don’t need them in your Word file.
Prepare your Word file
- Use Word’s Heading 1 style for chapter titles — that is how chapters are found.
- Don’t use spaces or tabs to indent; the style handles indents.
- Remove page numbers, headers and manual page breaks — ebooks reflow.
- Use a scene-break symbol such as * * * rather than empty lines.
Preview before you publish
Preview each chapter as it will look on a phone, a Kindle and in dark mode. Then upload the EPUB to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo or Google Play Books. Check your file with the EPUB validator first.
