❓ Questions
Which barcode do I need?
EAN-13 for products in shops, Amazon and Daraz outside the USA. UPC-A for the USA. ITF-14 for outer cartons. Code 128 for your own SKUs, inventory and shipping labels (Amazon FBA uses Code 128 for FNSKU labels). Data Matrix when the space is tiny.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of EAN/UPC numbers is calculated from the others so scanners can spot mistakes. Type 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A) and we add it automatically; if you type the full number we check it.
How big should I print it?
EAN-13 at 100% is about 37×26 mm. You can go down to 80% if the printer is good, or up to 200% for large boxes. Do not cut the height too much and keep the white margin on both sides. Use SVG or PDF so the bars stay sharp.
Does the first number show where the product was made?
No — the prefix (for example 896 for Pakistan) shows which GS1 country office issued the company number, not where the product was made.

Create real, scannable barcodes

This free barcode generator makes print-ready barcodes for retail products, inventory, shipping and documents. It calculates check digits automatically, warns you when a number is invalid, sets the correct quiet zones and exports vector SVG or PDF so barcodes stay crisp on any printer.

Which barcode do I need?

EAN-13Retail products worldwide, ISBN books
UPC-ARetail products in the USA and Canada, Amazon US
Code 128SKUs, inventory, shipping labels (letters + numbers)
Code 39Industry, ID badges, older systems
ITF-14Outer cartons and cases
GS1-128Logistics labels with batch, expiry and weight
Data Matrix / QR / PDF417 / Aztec2D codes for small parts, tickets and documents

Important: barcode numbers for retail

The generator draws a correct barcode for any number, but to sell in supermarkets and on most marketplaces your EAN/UPC numbers must be licensed from GS1 (your national GS1 office, e.g. GS1 Pakistan or GS1 US). Amazon checks numbers against the GS1 database. For internal stock, use Code 128 with your own SKUs.

Printing tips

  • Print EAN/UPC at 80–200% of nominal size (100% EAN-13 ≈ 37.3 × 25.9 mm).
  • Black bars on white is the safest combination; never print red bars.
  • Keep the white quiet zone on both sides.
  • Thermal printers: choose 203 or 300 DPI to match your printer.

Making labels? Use the label sheets option, or the shipping label generator for parcels.

Check digits and validation

EAN, UPC and ITF codes end in a check digit. Type the number without it and the generator adds it; type the full number and it is verified. Invalid characters for the chosen type are flagged before you download.

Print it right

  • The PDF (exact size) prints at the real millimetre size — print at 100%, not “fit to page”.
  • Use SVG for packaging designers, PNG at 300 DPI for labels.
  • Dark bars on white, with white space on both sides.
  • For many products, use Bulk & labels to make a ZIP or print label sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the barcodes scannable?
