Upwork Fees 2026 for Freelancers: Service Fee, Connects and Withdrawals

Upwork’s fees changed a lot in the last two years. There is no longer one simple percentage — the fee varies by contract, applying costs money, and withdrawing has its own fees. Here is the full picture for 2026.

1. The variable service fee (0–15%)

Upwork now charges freelancers a variable service fee between 0% and 15% per contract. The exact rate is shown on the job before you submit a proposal, so you know it in advance. It is taken from every payment on that contract — fixed-price milestones and hourly payments alike.

2. Connects: the cost of applying

To submit a proposal you spend Connects, which cost $0.15 each. A job may need several Connects, and boosting a proposal costs more. If you send 20 proposals a month at 16 Connects each, that is 320 Connects — $48 a month before you win anything. Count it as a real business cost.

3. Withdrawal fees

MethodFee (Sept 2026)Notes

Direct to US bank (ACH)Free with a US tax address, otherwise $2.99US accounts

Available methods and fees depend on your country. Always check the “Get paid” settings in your account.

4. Currency conversion

When dollars become rupees, taka or pesos, the rate used usually includes a margin. Upwork’s partners set the rate for local withdrawals. A 1.5% margin on $1,000 is $15 — often more than the withdrawal fee itself.

Worked example: a $500 fixed-price contract

Contract$500.00
Service fee (10% on this contract)−$50.00
Connects to win it (16 × $0.15)−$2.40
Direct to Local Bank withdrawal−$0.99
Conversion margin (about 1.5%)−$6.70
What really arrivesabout $439.91 (88%)

Price for the fees

If you need $450 in hand from a contract with a 10% fee, bid at least $500 — and a little more to cover Connects and conversion. Use the calculator’s “I want to receive exactly…” mode, and start from a rate that covers your living costs with the freelance rate calculator.

Ways to pay less

  1. Apply selectively. Fewer, better proposals waste fewer Connects.
  2. Look at the fee before you apply — compare contracts by what you keep, not only the budget.
  3. Withdraw monthly instead of weekly to cut fixed fees.
  4. Compare the amount that arrives across withdrawal methods with the exchange margin calculator.

Upwork fees are set per contract and per country and can change. Figures here come from Upwork’s published model and public 2026 sources; your account shows the exact numbers.
