Example: a $19.99 nonfiction paperback and $9.99 ebook

Take a 240-page, 6 × 9 inch black-and-white paperback. KDP prints it for $3.88, so a sale on Amazon pays 60% × $19.99 − $3.88 = $8.11. Sold through KDP Expanded Distribution it pays only $4.12. Through IngramSpark at a 40% discount, with about $4.83 print cost and the 1.875% fee, it pays about $6.79; at a 55% bookstore discount that drops to about $3.79. D2D Print pays about $4.16.

For the $9.99 ebook with a 3 MB file, KDP pays $6.99 − $0.45 delivery = $6.54, while IngramSpark and Draft2Digital pay about $5.94 and $5.99 through most stores.

Which should you use?

  • Paperbacks: KDP pays the most for sales on Amazon itself. For bookstores and other online stores, IngramSpark usually pays more than KDP Expanded Distribution and is what bookstores and libraries order from. A common setup is KDP for Amazon plus IngramSpark for everyone else, with KDP Expanded Distribution turned off.
  • Ebooks: you choose between KDP Select (Kindle Unlimited page reads, but the ebook must be exclusive to Amazon) and going wide with Draft2Digital or IngramSpark to reach Apple, Kobo, B&N, Google and libraries. Our KENP calculator shows what Kindle Unlimited pays.
  • Bookstore placement: bookstores usually expect a 53–55% discount and returns. That lowers your IngramSpark royalty a lot, so only offer it if you are actively selling to stores.
  • Hardcovers and colour: this calculator compares black-and-white paperbacks. Use each platform’s own calculator for other formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does KDP or IngramSpark pay more?

For paperbacks sold on Amazon, KDP pays more (60% of list minus printing at $9.99 or more). For sales in other stores, IngramSpark at a 40% discount usually pays more than KDP Expanded Distribution (40% of list minus printing). For ebooks, KDP pays 70% minus delivery from $2.99 to $12.99; IngramSpark pays about 85% of the store’s share.

How much does Draft2Digital take?

About 10% of the list price on ebooks (precisely, 15% of what the store pays). Most stores keep about 30%, so you earn roughly 60% of list. For D2D Print paperbacks you earn about 45% of list minus the print cost.

What is the IngramSpark market access fee in 2026?

From February 2026 IngramSpark charges a global distribution (market access) fee of 1.875% of the list price on each wholesale sale, up from 1.5%. Title setup and revisions are free.

What wholesale discount should I set on IngramSpark?

Around 40% is common if you mainly want online stores to list your book. Bookstores usually expect 53–55% and returns. A higher discount makes stores more willing to stock the book but lowers your royalty, as the calculator shows.

Can I use KDP and IngramSpark together?

Yes. Many authors publish the paperback on KDP for Amazon and on IngramSpark for bookstores and other online stores, and turn off KDP Expanded Distribution to avoid two versions competing. Each platform needs its own ISBN unless you use your own ISBN on both.

Can my ebook be in KDP Select and on Draft2Digital?

No. KDP Select requires the ebook to be exclusive to Amazon while enrolled. You can still sell the paperback anywhere.

Why are IngramSpark and D2D print costs estimates?

Their print prices depend on trim, paper and binding and change from time to time, and neither publishes a simple public formula. The calculator uses an estimate for black-and-white paperbacks; enter the cost from their calculators for an exact answer.
