How to Convert Salary to Hourly: Formula, Table and Examples (2026)

A job offer says $60,000 a year; a contract says $30 an hour. Which pays more? To compare them you need the same unit. Here is the simple formula, a ready table and the traps that make your real hourly wage lower than it looks.

The formula

Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ hours worked per year

A full-time job is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. So:

  • $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour
  • $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06 an hour
  • $100,000 ÷ 2,080 = $48.08 an hour

Quick mental shortcut: halve the yearly salary and drop three zeros. $60,000 → about $30 an hour (exact: $28.85).

Salary to hourly table (40 hours a week)

Yearly salaryHourly (2,080 h)MonthlyWeekly
$30,000$14.42$2,500$577
$40,000$19.23$3,333$769
$50,000$24.04$4,167$962
$60,000$28.85$5,000$1,154
$70,000$33.65$5,833$1,346
$75,000$36.06$6,250$1,442
$80,000$38.46$6,667$1,538
$90,000$43.27$7,500$1,731
$100,000$48.08$8,333$1,923
$120,000$57.69$10,000$2,308
$150,000$72.12$12,500$2,885

Amounts are before tax. For any other number, use the salary to hourly calculator — it also handles taxes, overtime and different weekly hours.

Monthly, bi-weekly and weekly pay to hourly

You know your…Hourly rate =Example
Monthly salarymonthly × 12 ÷ 2,080$4,000 → $23.08
Bi-weekly paycheckpaycheck ÷ 80$1,800 → $22.50
Weekly payweekly ÷ 40$900 → $22.50
Daily rate (8 h)daily ÷ 8$200 → $25.00

Part-time and long hours

Use your real weekly hours. A part-time job of 30 hours a week has 30 × 52 = 1,560 hours a year, so $36,000 a year is $23.08 an hour. If a salaried job regularly needs 50 hours a week, $60,000 is really only $23.08 an hour (60,000 ÷ 2,600), not $28.85.

Your real hourly wage

The 2,080-hour number assumes every week is paid. To compare a salaried job with freelance or hourly work, remove the weeks you do not work and add the hours you spend commuting or on call. Example: $60,000, 4 weeks of vacation and holidays (48 working weeks), 40 hours plus 5 hours of commuting a week → 60,000 ÷ (48 × 45) = $27.78 an hour.

Salaried jobs often include benefits (health insurance, retirement match, paid leave) worth 20–30% of the salary. An hourly or freelance rate has to cover those itself — the freelance rate calculator shows how much higher it should be.

Outside the US

The formula is the same in any currency; only the hours change. A Pakistani salary of Rs 1,800,000 a year at 40 hours a week is 1,800,000 ÷ 2,080 = Rs 865 an hour. Many countries have a standard 48-hour week (2,496 hours a year), which lowers the hourly figure — enter your real hours in the calculator.

Going the other way

To turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary, multiply by 2,080: $25 an hour × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. The hourly to salary calculator does this and shows take-home pay, and the overtime calculator adds time-and-a-half hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. For a full-time job that is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), so $50,000 a year is $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour.

How much is $60,000 a year per hour?

About $28.85 an hour, based on 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours).

Should I use 2,080 or 2,000 hours?

Use 2,080 if your vacation and holidays are paid. Use about 2,000 (or fewer) if you want the rate for the hours you actually work, for example to compare with freelance or contract work.

How do I convert a monthly salary to hourly?

Multiply the monthly salary by 12 and divide by 2,080. A monthly salary of $4,000 is $48,000 a year, or about $23.08 an hour.
